FAQ - Dasatinib

Dasatinib is used to treat a specific type of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML; a type of white blood cell cancer) as a first-line treatment and in people who can no longer benefit from other leukaemia medications, such as imatinib, or who are unable to take these medications due to side effects. Dasatinib is also used in the treatment of a specific type of chronic CML in children.

Dasatinib in combined effect with quercetin (Quercetin and Dasatinib) is a safe and effective treatment option for improving clinical care of healthy individuals of all ages. Dasatinib plus quercetin has been shown in studies to slow cell proliferation, slowing ageing and the risk of age-related diseases.

Sprycel is a cancer medicine. It is used to treat adults with the following types of leukaemia (cancer of the white blood cells):

  • chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in the ‘chronic’ phase in newly diagnosed patients who are ‘Philadelphia chromosome positive’ (Ph+). In CML, granulocytes (a type of white blood cell) start growing out of control. Ph+ indicates that some of the patient’s genes have rearranged to form a special chromosome called the Philadelphia chromosome, which produces an enzyme called Bcr-Abl kinase, which causes leukaemia.
  • CML has three stages: chronic, accelerated, and blast.Sprycel is used when other treatments, including imatinib (another cancer medicine), do not work or cause troublesome side effects;
  • Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), in which lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) multiply excessively, or “lymphoid blast” CML.Sprycel is used when other treatments do not work or cause troublesome side effects.

Sprycel is also used to treat the following conditions in children:

  • newly diagnosed Ph+ CML in the ‘chronic’ phase, or Ph+ CML when other treatments, including imatinib, cannot be given or have not worked;
  • newly diagnosed Ph+ ALL treated with chemotherapy (cancer drugs).

Sprycel contains the active substance dasatinib.

Dasatinib belongs to a class of drugs known as kinase inhibitors. It works by preventing an abnormal protein from signalling cancer cells to multiply. This inhibits the spread of cancer cells.

  • Bleeding gums.

  • burning, tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands, arms, feet, or legs.
  • chest pain or tightness.
  • coughing up blood.
  • decrease in the amount of urine.
  • ear congestion.

It is usually taken once a day, in the morning or evening, with or without food. Take dasatinib around the same time every day.
